1. Survival Magnesium Starter Compass Whistle

Survival Magnesium Starter Compass Whistle

There are three different sizes available. The Znden Fire Starter is available in three different thickness options: The Pro at 10mm, the Fatty at 1/200 and the Trad at 8mm. High quality all weather fire starter is weather resistant. Strikes up to 15,000 times to make a fire when you want or need it most. The Magnesium fire starter stick, large scraper, compass, whistle and lanyard are all in one. It's convenient and compact. The fire starter rod can fit in cars, survival kits, and camping gear.

Brand: Survival Spark

👤Great starter! The whistle is loud and the compass is perfect. I'm not sure if others are using it correctly. I warn you that it will not work without a little common sense, but it comes with a set of directions. This thing is pretty durable. I dropped it from a high point and it survived. It's easy to handle and it's bigger than the picture shows. The only thing I would recommend is to remove the cheap rope and put some paracord on it.

👤I love this fire starter. We have a lot of campfires in our backyard fire pit, and it's been fun practicing different ways to start a fire. I bought this to use for camping, but it turns out we use it at home as well. It's easier than matches once you get used to it. We live in a windy area, and matches tend to blow out as soon as we strike them. I tried a smaller product that was similar to the one I tried. The larger size makes it easier to use. I get a lot of magnesium off. If you're having trouble getting it to work, try taking the strikers off the string. Just practice!

👤I usually don't use a firestarter, but I do include a fresh Bic in my bag in case the normal one runs out of fluid. I haven't used one since I was in the Scouts, so I purchased this out of curiosity. It took a bit of work to remove the coating, but once done, I was treated to a pretty impressive spark. I was able to catch a small amount of dry grass on fire without having to remove any magnesium from my bag which is a bonus since this is more of a last ditch item. The lanyard allowed me to secure it within my bag without having to worry about things getting spread out. The included compass seems to work well, but it requires me to tap on it a few times. I will not knock off the rating for that, as I forgot it was included on the device until I received it. It took a while for the whistle to figure out. I'm worried that I may have offended the neighbors when I got it to work at 11pm. The seller e-mailed me with instructions before I received it, and the instructions included in the package were the same. It's something that I appreciate from sellers as the process of purchasing on Amazon feels impersonal. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a firestarter. It takes up very little bag space and works well.

👤Works well. It was easy to start a fire within a minute. For the people who complain about the whistle. I can't imagine how weak their lungs are. It is very loud. I am not complaining because the compass seems to point in the same direction as my real compass, and it works perfectly. 5/5 And. When I need a new one, I will buy again.

2. Everstryke Match Pro Lighter Waterproof

Everstryke Match Pro Lighter Waterproof

Light weight, flexible, easy to carry. It's perfect in your backpack for hiking, camping and other outdoor activities. The new Everstryke Pro has a replaceable flint and is 10x longer than the old one. The all-inclusive fire starting kit contains the flint and wick, and it fits in your pocket. The flame burns at over 600 degrees fahrenheit. Each match has the ability to burn 15,000 long burning strikes. The O-Ring keeps fuel from being lost. This one won't burn your fingertips, so it's easy to use. Also, note: Lighter fluid is not included.

Brand: Everstryke

👤The metal insert fell apart as I tried to remove it. The metal insert stayed in the housing even though the strikers and wick assembly pulled out. I'm going to return the lighter. I let the company know of my problem and they responded quickly, telling me that they were sending me a replacement. Customer service has been great so far. When I receive my replacement, I will update. My replacement lighter came two days later. I reassembled it, filled it with fluid, and it made fire. It was on fire over and over again. I would give it 5 stars for its intended purpose, as a $10 emergency fire starter. Their customer service is excellent. Even though my first lighter broke, the company sent out a replacement and it worked perfectly. I'm going to give them a 5 star review.

👤I bought this to use as a source of fire. When you need them to, zypoos won't work because the fuel evaporates. I put this in the kit with the intention of testing it out after a month. It's a month now. I got the kit out. There was no smell of fumes. A check of the felt and fuel "fuzz" showed that the lighter was still full. It will remain in my kit, I'm very happy with it.

👤This is not very strong. I have tested it out a few times, and a small wind can blow it out. It's not a bad thing because it's easy to extinguish and it's tiny. It only takes a small amount of fuel, but it seems to be sealed tight enough that it will hold it for a long time. The small flame is enough to start a fire, which I did earlier tonight to burn some boxes. I keep a small van of Zippo fluid in my camping bag and I use a zip up pull to hold it. I already have some waterproof matches in the bag, but this is a nice alternative if they run out.

👤I had a lighter for three months. When I got it, I filled it once and it still lights up. I don't use it daily or even weekly because it's a backup. This lighter is great because of that. It will work when you need it. I pulled it out to see if it still lights up. One flick, lights up. Anyone who's carried a classic Zippo knows how quickly the fuel can evaporate. It's worse if you need a light, but your lighter is out of fuel.

👤A great lighter! I bought this for my husband, a Master Plumber, a small business owner and non smoker who uses torches for welding and soldering and other job related tasks. He has lighters in his truck for his torches but always loses them and has to run out in the middle of a job to buy a pack of lighters. He only had it for a few days but he loves it. He keeps it on his belt. His colleagues all want one. I'll be buying a back up for my husband and house.

3. Scotte Windproof Lighter Electric Flashlight

Scotte Windproof Lighter Electric Flashlight

It is an excellent ensemble that combines a twin-arc lighter and glare flashlight, one end is designed as a lighter, and the other end is a flashlight and a Magnesium Fire Starter. It is a great business gift and a great Christmas gift for friends and parents. The function of lighter is to quickly ignite tobacco pipe, cigar, candlestick and accomplish all the work that needs to be done by a lighter. Fast charging can be achieved in two hours, and can be used up to 300 times. After fully charged, can be cut off. There were no flames or wind during the use. The automatic protection mode will be cut off automatically if you press the switch for more than 7 seconds. The Magnesium Fire Starter is a 5-in-1 device. Whistle, Steel Scraper, 450LB 8core Paracord and Rod. It's less than 2 ounces and is more reliable than matches or lighters. The flashlight has two modes, normal lighting mode and flash mode, which can be changed by pressing the switch. Continuous illumination can be achieved with a full charge. The operation is easy to do. There is a problem with the product. They support the service.

Brand: Scotte

👤I love this light. It's easy to use and it fits in your hand. It works well in the wind. The light is nice and bright. Sturdy construction. The standard cell phone cable works with the Charger. It's a good idea to recommend it.

👤This is something that I love. The light makes a sound that hurts my ears, but it works well and the flashlight is bright.

👤El artculo est tal, por cierto.

👤Absolutely love this lighter. I use a heavy smoker for three days before it needs to be charged. The flashlight has three settings. It never lets me down.

👤Excellent product. The flashlight and lighter are amazing. The outer shell is comfortable in the hand and the high power beam lets you see clearly all. The weather proof design is a plus. 5 stars!

👤Similar to other arcs lighters but cost less.

4. Etopstech Emergency Permanent Unlimited Waterproof

Etopstech Emergency Permanent Unlimited Waterproof

Up to 3000 degrees C spark can be provided at any altitude. It lasts for approximately 12,000 strikes. Emergency fire starter for Bushcraft, Hiking, Hunting, Fishing, Camping, EDC, Emergency, BBQ, Gas Camp Stoves, etc. The body is made of steel andABS. It works well when it's wet or cold. A small amout of fuel should be added before use. It's good for at least 15,000 strikes. Premium quality magnesium core strikers. There are many things to do in the summer such as fires, Stoves, Gas-Barbecues,Picnic, BBQ, Paper, Dry Grass, Bark and Maya Dust. A great waterproof tool for camping.

Brand: Etopstech

👤I purchased a pack of these and was hoping they would be a great replacement for waterproof matches in an emergency situation. No. Not even close. I weighed all five metal matches without fuel and fully fueled. I let them sit on my workbench for about six weeks and checked their weights. Over a 48 day period, two of them lost a significant amount of fuel. Smaller amounts of fuel were lost by the other three. You can't rely on these to keep their fuel for long. I found it hard to light them. They spark, but rarely light the end of the metal match. Talk about an exercise that made you angry. If they were regular matches, you would think they were wet. I would like to know if a manufacturer can guarantee that lighter fluid won't leak from their product. They will run out of fuel eventually if they can't guarantee that. Why do they sell a product that needs refilling even if you don't use it? Who is going to remember to refill them? A cigarette lighter is more predictable. The product is cheap. I would rather buy a really well built item like a zippo lighter than a bunch of flimsy items. The metal match was screwed into the metal container. You can break the metal clip with your fingers. Think about a survival situation in the cold woods. Would you rather have a fire source that is out of fuel, or have nothing to start a fire, because you know you have nothing to start a fire? There is a false sense of security with this product. I put them in the garbage can. I don't think it's worth the time to return them to the manufacturer. If the manufacturer wants my business, not my money first, they will produce a high quality, reliable, safe and easy to light product. They will keep selling this substandard product if they want my money first. They either don't know what they're doing or they know what they're doing, and they don't care about quality or function. The product has a rubber o-ring, which makes it look like it doesn't leak fuel. It does leak fuel. Not worth the high risk of not lighting when needed.

👤The packaging had the Ink designs smeared on it. It took forever to light and when it did, it covered half of the metal stick. The igniter was still on fire in the trash can and I threw it. I had to put out the fire with my hands.

👤You need to be careful with this thing. They mean it when they say don't overfill. You can't easily gauge when it's full. When I lit it the first time it jumped out, it set itself ablaze and fell on top of my comforter. I was in a panic and shaking my hand to put out the flames, and the rest of the fluid on my rug was on my way to the sink. It does its job with the fluid in the chamber. I wouldn't use more than that.

5. Immortal Matchstick Permanent Emergency Mountaineering

Immortal Matchstick Permanent Emergency Mountaineering

The package includes 20 x Cotton Wick and 20 x Rubber Ring. It's widely used for outdoor camping, hiking, picnic, bbq parties, firework and many other emergency survival occasions. The metal lighters are made of a material that can be refilled at least 10,000 times, fall proof, waterproof and windproof, and are suitable for home based, mountaineering, hiking and other outdoor activities. Before using the igniter, you need to add a small amount of fuel and inject the match stick for 1-2 minutes, the cotton core completely absorbs the fuel. Lighters do not contain fuel according to air mail regulations. The dual function design of the matchstick and key ring is a practical survival tool that can be applied to holding a key, backpack and more, portable to carry around during the trip and chic in appearance. The mini portable is 2.5 x 0.75 x 0.63 inches and weighs 1.3 ounces. Put it in your pocket. The key chain can be thrown on your key ring, lanyard, or backpack for a day hike or backpacking.

Brand: No-branded

👤Have no idea how they will be used. There are two of them in the package. It's all over. There is no clue as to how to proceed. Do you need lighter fluid? Is the string supposed to blow? There were so many questions that no data was provided.

👤You will need to carry a bottle of Ronsonol with you. It is a great idea, but not practical.

👤I bought this for my grandson who is camping and fishing. Even if it is windy or rainy, this will help him light fires.

👤After 6-7 strikes, flint snapped off. The person says that the person burns super fast. Cheaply made. More of a novelty than anything.

6. Comidox Starter Lighter Survival Convenience

Comidox Starter Lighter Survival Convenience

If you don't like their fire steel rod, you can return it for a full refund. 30 days free replacement or return and 1 year service is what they offer. The mini portable solar spark lighter can start a fire with the sun shining down. The sun's energy is focused on a focal point with a high temperature. If you point the piece of fat wood and char cord at the sun, it will light up. It's a perfect outdoor tool for hiking, backpacking, travelling, and any other outdoor sports. The mini portable is easy to carry.

Brand: Comidox

👤This product is made of plastic and not worth it. It doesn't generate enough heat to start a fire. I put a paper towel in the cigarette holder because it says that it's a solar fire starter, but there's no literature about it. On a bright sunny day, I went outside. It was 85 degrees outside. After focusing the light it was able to collect onto the paper. I propped it up and worked in the yard. I checked it out in an hour and a half. The paper was not damaged. I tried to dip the paper towel in gasoline. Nothing. Don't buy it. We put up with cheap Chinese junk. This is similar to the X-ray glasses they used to advertise in the back of comic books in the 70's.

👤I tried this thing out in the sun and overcast weather. I got a little smoke after 5 minutes. I pulled out my magnifying glass. I had an open flame. Don't buy this thing, buy a piece of glass. It's pretty well made for the cost, even though it's made of plastic. I thought it was metal.

👤They are plastic, but do they ignite cotton, char cloth, and find steel wool? It is another way to light a fire. Does it take practice and a sunny day? This is unbeatable for the price.

👤It does work and is very cool. You have to align with the sun to get the heat to focus. Takes practice. The novelty is cool. It's a fair price because they give you two so you can gift one.

👤Not a lot of use except for lighting a cigarette. I really can't like anything else.

👤Even though I used it in the sun, it didn't work. The beam was not strong enough to start a fire.

👤The item arrived on time. I haven't used this item yet. I will order again from this vendor.

7. Scoutdoors Permanent Emergency Waterproof Windproof

Scoutdoors Permanent Emergency Waterproof Windproof

This one won't burn your fingertips, so it's easy to use. Also, note: Lighter fluid is not included. It's a perfect addition to your Emergency Kit, Hiking backpack, Hunting gear, Camping gear, Bugout Kit, Zombie apocalypse or Bomb Shelter. Provides 15,000+ strikes and fires. Convenient ring with clips to almost anything. The flintstone on the side of the canister has a black coating. When the coating is removed, sparks will appear, but it may take 5 to 10 strikes. The match has a one-year warranty. Please contact them if you have any questions.

Brand: Scoutdoors

👤Doesn't come with instructions. What type of fuel is needed? How is it added? How much does it cost? Why isn't that stated in listing? What is the purpose of the wax stick in the bag? How is the wax stick used? Why not include a carrying bag? After looking at the card with a magnifying glass, it didn't explain anything.

👤I hope the title sums it up. The hole left when you pull out the strikers is where all the fluid is. It sparked really nice when I went to strike. The flame came from the open hole left by the wick. The easy way to the fluid was found by the sparks. I threw it on the ground because I was afraid it would melt in my hand. It wasn't worth the effort. I replaced it with one from the store. Don't buy it!

👤Does not even exist. I don't think telling people helps.

👤It needs lighter fluid to work. There are leaks.

👤This inexpensive product is dangerous and poorly designed. The fact that you must add liquid fuel to the match holding chamber before trying to ignite the small metal match by striking it against the striking surface is not emphasized. It's obvious that spilling the fuel and creating an accidental fire is a possibility. I threw the product away because of my own safety.

👤Doesn't work, very wary of this operation, no idea how it's suppose to work, no instructions, cheaply presented, mistake to have ordered.

👤It is a nice product, but it is very small, and works great, but I am not happy about it. Was misled by the picture. I love it.

👤This is a great product for a smoker. If you fill with lighter fuel, be sure to turn the engine upside down to drain any extra fuel, then wipe the outside of the car with a cloth, and make it tight. It doesn't burn your skin if it's tight, because it doesn't leak in your pocket.

8. Permanent Keychain Waterproof Anywhere Survival

Permanent Keychain Waterproof Anywhere Survival

This multi-purpose key chain multitool has a flint metal match lighter, a beer bottle opener, and an edc key. It is a great deal to have one edc survival tool. They promise that it is sold by an affordable price yet comes with a one year service, any problem like received an empty box, broken or malfunctioning, will be fixed. They will give each customer satisfactory after-sales service if you contact them. The utility and convenience of this keychain make it a must-have hiking or camping gear. Works equally well when it's cold or wet. If you need to use the igniter, you need to add a small amount of fuel before you use it. Once the cotton core absorbs the fuel, you can use the match stick. Lighters product are not allowed to contain fuel. The cotton and flint starter can endure at least 10,000 strikes. Premium quality magnesium core strikers.

Brand: Yusud

👤Maybe this will work as advertised. I don't know until I buy lighter fluid that I need it. I didn't know that I needed lighter fluid until I tried to ignite the cloth wicks with a flint. I didn't realize there was a need for lighter fluid until I removed the black plastic threaded plug from the other end of the shaft. There is a mystery about the recess in the formed packaging, which is probably a small bottle of lighter fluid. I think the two black rubber "O"-rings are replacements at the hilt-end of the strikers shaft to keep fluid from leaking out. The replacement for the striking end of the strikers is something I think about. I'm stretching it to give it one star because of the missing information and product in the contraption that's supposed to start a flame. It's not much of a fire starter if it'sposed to ignite a flame, but doesn't work as advertised, and with no instructions of what to do to start a fire. A box of matches is ready to go.

👤This is a fire hazard. It takes a lot of force to start the fire on the lighter and when you flick it all the lighter fluid sprinkles everywhere, so I bought this online thinking it would be cool. It made lighting something very difficult because it was so dangerous. I don't recommend.

👤As a reliable source of fire, it is not a rubber ring that stops liquid leaks but rather a grate that is constantly out of fuel. If you remember to fill it, it is a grate product.

👤If you follow the instructions on the back of the package, it will work as advertised. I used a small flat head screwdriver to remove the protective coating from the flint rod. Add the fluid, then add more until you can tip it upside down and the fluid runs out. It's ready to go if you wipe it off with a paper towel. The mine has lights on. Make sure you keep the length correct. I bought an accessory kit with extra flints and wicks because I like it so much. I always have a lighter die on when I camp. This will be useful.

👤The lack of instructions made me think I had paid for something useless. It wasn't until later that I realized I needed to add lighter fluid. I kept trying to hit the matchstick.

👤I was very excited for this item. I've ordered everything the past few times. The Trigger was finally pulled! I had lighter fluid ready and waited for it to soak, but I didn't get anything. They describe the matchstick as broken, so maybe that would help put the steel "thingy" back in it. I am busy to send back this item and I am not going to risk going to a post office because I am trying to run a business. I would be happy if I received a new one or the matchstick that screws in. The ball is in the park.

9. Yusud Matchstick Refillable Permanent Emergency

Yusud Matchstick Refillable Permanent Emergency

The flintstone on the side of the canister has a black coating. When the coating is removed, sparks will appear, but it may take 5 to 10 strikes. The match has a one-year warranty. Please email them if you have any questions. Double-sides for ignition means double ferrocerium rods and double working life, compared to the ordinary permanent matches. At least 20,000 strikes can be experienced by the flint rods and theadjustable wick. This multi-purpose keychain multitool has a flint metal match lighter, a beer bottle opener and an edc. It is a great deal to have one edc survival tool. The metal key chain is a perfect tool as it combines utility and convenience, which makes it a must-have for hiking or camping. Works equally well when it's cold or wet. It is designed very elegant and fancy, 2 pack with elegant gift box, also attach the free cotton core and extra rubber rings to replace. It is a great gift idea for many occasions such as a business gift or birthday. It comes with a year of service for any quality problem, and it is sold by an affordable price.

Brand: Yusud

👤I wanted to get a similar item as a gift. I can't give them out to anyone I have a good relationship with because of the price. The match is very short and both sides of the striking area are hard to get into. The bottle opener portion will not open a bottle. The key chains seem to be decent, but that's not a good thing. I would still feel let down if the pair cost $1.

👤Product seems to work well, but you have to use it several times to remove the factory coating from the strikers surface. It lights up when I do this.

👤It is almost impossible to light up. Purchase BIC lighters and keep them around. These items are hard to use.

👤This is a great product. It feels strong. It works so far.

👤The items were exactly what they were described. I am sure it will do its job.

👤You never know, keep it in my hunting and camping gear.

👤It works and I need it too.

👤I bought these for my husband. He likes it.

10. AIKENR Permanent Matchstick Waterproof Emergency

AIKENR Permanent Matchstick Waterproof Emergency

The cotton can endure at least 10,000 strikes. Premium quality magnesium core strikers. The flint metal permanent match lighter is a great deal to play as an edc survival tool, which is great deal to camping, hiking, backpacking and adventure outdoor. Permanent match is made of zinc alloy and weighs 1.3 ounces. Every day carry it with you, put it in your pocket, car key chain, or backpack. It is a must-have hiking or camping gear for hunting, traveling and other outdoors activities because of its utility and convenience. Works equally well when it's cold or wet. The cotton can endure at least 10,000 strikes. Premium quality magnesium core strikers. It is a great gift for friends and family on any occasion like Birthday, Father's Day, Anniversary, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other day.

Brand: Aikenr

👤I had to laugh after reading the bad reviews. You have to add fuel just like a lighter. You have to hit the strikers a few times to get the factory coating off. These lighters are designed for survivalists. Learn how to use it. The thing is great.

👤This means you don't know how to use a simple lighter, so I have to laugh. The flint strikers work fine once you charge the wick. I know I'm old but I don't know you need fuel to light this lighter. It may take a few strikes, but my old 60 year old Zippo does the same. It's great to have a key chain for emergencies.

👤They are barely a spark.

👤Useful addition to your camping/hiking supplies. I haven't used mine yet, but the instructions are a little unclear. Remove the black wax from the flint strips for the first time. The small contact area is not good for spark making. The "black wax plating" does not work very well. I used a pumice stone to get this done. It took quite some time and still didn't get it all off. I got enough off to start a fire. It seems like this protective coating could be easier to remove. The fluid leaking out of the bottom of the bottle is the only problem I've had. There is a black plastic plug that screws into the bottom, but it doesn't arrive sealed, or at least mine didn't. I was able to fix it once I was aware of it. This set seems to be more decorative than functional, but I wouldn't purchase it unless I wanted to go on an adventure. It's better to purchase another brand for dependability.

👤I got one to work. The screw plug on the bottom was very difficult to open, to fill with lighter fluid and the plastic got stripped from the screwdriver. The seal ring on one was broken so the unit wouldn't work. I have one of those lights. The seller was not very helpful when I contacted him. It's difficult to make sense of the directions that were sent for filling the product listing.

👤It's very difficult to strike and catch flame after a small amount of use because the wicking burns away. It worked better at first, though I wouldn't call it easy to strike, and the size of the flame was so inconsistent that I can't imagine anyone using this regularly to light candles or cigarettes. I'm disappointed that I didn't use it as much as I would have if it was a Bic lighter. The execution fails to live up to the concept of novel and fun. This is a novelty only, which is disappointing because I could see myself using it over traditional matches.

11. Bayite Survival Ferrocerium Striker Pro Paracord

Bayite Survival Ferrocerium Striker Pro Paracord

Water resistant to 100m is suitable for swimming and snorkeling, but not diving. The length of the rod is 6 inches. The rod has a diameter of about 1/2. 9ft Paracord gives you a good grip and never comes off. Always be prepared to start a fire with the bayite new Striker-Pro strikers. The bayite 6 Striking Edges Striker-Pro is made from tool grade steel and has a distinct hardness, which makes it great for both left and right hands. Extra large. A shower of hot sparks can light fire in any situation. Weather resistant. It works all weather. The back of a box cutter can be used to cut a blade. That is the most efficient scraper that can be found. Don't use a bad quality knife. It won't produce enough sparks if it has insufficient hard blade.

Brand: Bayite

👤These are large. Love them. They are great if you have several. The rods are great, but the strikers aren't worth much. The stricker pulls are small and can be used after the 2nd or 3rd use. It's not clear why you would put something so small in a big piece of plastic. The blade should be bigger so it can stay intact. I was put in a bad spot many times. Had to drop two stars. Fix the issue and it will return to 5 stars.

👤The best ferro rod ever. The lanyard is not long enough to be a comfortable necklace, but the rod is off the hook. Even the greats will love it. I went to Lowe's and bought a $5 blue hawk that was made by the pruners and it doubled if not tripled. It takes some getting used to but it's a great combo. I'm going to use para-cord to attach the strikers and put a big key ring through the lanyard to make it work. This rod is worth every penny. Don't practice it in the house or you may burn a small hole in your ottoman, but with this you will be shoots sparks in no time and add a carbide sharpener to it and watch out, but be warned, don't practice it in the house or you may burn a

👤I got into woodcraft and the outdoors a few years back and bought one of those "Bear Grylls" knives that came with a ferro rod, but it was useless. I've decided to try various dedicated ferro rod/striker set ups instead of some version tossed into a bundle of other so-called "survival" items. Lighters that can run out of fuel, waterproofed matches, and other means of making a fire seem to be unreliable. I don't live outdoors or face survival needs at my office, but getting into the outdoors seemed like a practical skill to learn, and a practical thing to do. I went for a European made kit after learning about the various compounds used. I bought a few kits from China. I know this is manufactured in China, but whatever factory they are using is producing a top notch product here, for an excellent price. It is better than my kit from Europe. This is a real world fire starting tool. Any kind of decent tinder needs more than the amount of spark to light it. You could get a fire going in almost any condition with the combo of this rod and strikers. I can light fat wood shavings, as well as basic wood shavings, or any practical tinder. The heavy coating on the rod takes a bit of work to remove. I used a sanding file to get down to the surface and it is spark heaven. The strikers is excellent. A lot of the kits made to look nice aren't as functional. This is a tool. It does as it is supposed to. More spark, longer lasting rod, and more surface from which to generate spark is what this is. I am very happy that it is a part of my pack now. I use it to light the fires in my fireplace because I like it so much. It's rewarding to be able to make fire. This product is highly recommendable. This one gets it done for a novice, intermediate or expert. Five stars! I hope this helps you find a good ferro rod. It's a good thing.
